My reflections/thoughts about giving up the job - mainly great sadness as
this was my best job of all my other responsibilities. I think it is so
important to make sure our students experience other cultures and can share
what they learn with their families and friends and so I am so proud to have
been a small part of making that happen

But I also enjoyed it more than I can tell you. I loved meeting so many
people from Japan and Fukuoka in particular (which is a much better place to
visit than Tokyo - but don't tell anyone from the Tokyo area I said that!)
and seeing the joy and happiness that they brought to many Australian
families. I loved visiting Fukuoka twice and sharing so many wonderful
experiences with my Japanese friends there. I enjoyed the food (oishi) and
the country side but most of all the people. There are people in Fukuoka
that I regard as dear friends: Mr. Yamada, Mr. Miyazaki (with the black
moustache) and Ms Akiko (who organized the exchange for 5 years and is
fondly remembered in Warrnambool and at Brauer College) and of course our
Japanese daughter Ms Yuko Kobayashi who is now part of our family and always
welcome in our house as it is her second home.

As for bad memories - I have none! Well maybe one when a teacher from Brauer
didn't get along with his homestay and that was very embarrassing for me and
difficult as well but it is not a long lasting memory and not an important one.

So I am sad I am not doing the job any more, happy that our important work
continues without me and hopeful that these wonderful relationships will
last a long time. Out of my family, my wife, my son and myself have visited
Fukuoka. I hope my daughter will do so soon and that Carol and myself will
have the opportunity to visit again soon.
